Swelling (edema) is the buildup of fluid in body tissues, most commonly noticed in the feet, ankles, legs, or hands. It can result from standing for long periods, high salt intake, minor injuries, or as a side effect of certain medications. In some cases, it may signal a more serious underlying condition.

See a doctor soon

Seek immediate medical attention if swelling is sudden, affects only one leg (which could indicate a blood clot), or is accompanied by chest pain or difficulty breathing. See a doctor if swelling is persistent, worsening, or accompanied by decreased urine output. When in doubt, consult a physician.
